In a world where attention spans wander every thirty seconds, Joe Busam's thirty-year career in cel animation might be considered inconceivable. Implausible. And who knows, maybe it is. But the more amazing thing about Joe is the passion, talent and dedication he still has for his craft. That he puts into his craft. That animate his animated world.
Joe, it can safely be said, is living the dream. He fell in love with cartoons as a kid—from Walt Disney to Max Fleischer to Chuck Jones. He drew cartoons as a kid. Studied, scrutinized and internalized them as a kid. All of which persisted into early adulthood. Then, through a little kismet and a lot of talent, Joe was able to find work in animation practically right out of art school. Today, he's still at it. Still loves it. And helping others to love it along the way.
Joe's encyclopedic knowledge of traditional animation allows him to emulate a cornucopia of styles as well as create totally original distinctive characters and worlds. His enthusiasm for the form is contagious and is matched only by his ability to bring "ink and paper" alive.
So, yeah, maybe a thirty-year career in animation is unbelievable. But maybe it takes thirty years to make cartoons that are so unbelievably engaging. |
